It’s the job you’ve been dreaming about, right?
You’re ready to take on a new job, the one where you have the freedom to work from home and the chance to meet new people.
It’s not the job that you thought would be the best fit for you, right.
That’s the title of the new book by former record store manager Robby Bowers.
The Lad Jobs is the brainchild of Bowers, who is now working as an independent record label manager.
It has been in the works for over a year.
You could say it’s been in Bowers’ DNA for some time, although the project started as a concept and was eventually published.
“There were a lot of ideas I had, but none were good,” he says.
“The first time I thought of the idea, it was just ‘I want to make it my career’.
I asked Bowers how he’d got started, and he gave me the story of a career he had before he was able to get a job. “
It was a tough time, as it was with all my projects, especially when you were working from home.”
I asked Bowers how he’d got started, and he gave me the story of a career he had before he was able to get a job.
He was working in a store and didn’t know what he wanted to do.
He told the manager he wanted a job as a record store worker.
The manager said ‘oh, you’ll get that in a minute’, and Bowers was taken aback.
“I remember thinking ‘what are you talking about?
I’m a record shop manager!’
I thought ‘well, you can’t really give me a job unless you give me the chance.’
I told the person ‘I don’t want to work for you if I don’t get the opportunity.’
I was like ‘what the hell are you saying?'”
Bowers is a former store manager who got his start at record stores.
“My first job was at the Red Lion in Sydney,” he recalls.
“They had the record store for sale and I thought, well, I’m going to go out and see what it’s all about.”
Bowers’ dream was to start his own record store.
He worked from home, did a lot more work than most people do, and had a lot to do with the success of the business.
But, he says, it wasn’t enough.
“You’re always looking for a way to make money.
You can’t go to a big city, and you’re not going to get the best record shop, and the best label.
You need people to work at your store.
I’d done my apprenticeship at that place, and I had this job lined up. “
So, I said ‘I’m going back to my parents’ record store, and it was the first time that I’d been able to do that.
I’d done my apprenticeship at that place, and I had this job lined up.
I knew that I had a great opportunity there, and at the same time I had to give that opportunity to the record shop.
It was a decision I made pretty quickly.”
What’s in it for you?
“It was about taking control of the experience of the customers, and having a relationship with them,” he explains.
“This was before record shops were big.
They were a place where people would come and spend a lot money, and people would buy records.
So I wanted that opportunity for people to come in and spend more money. “
But the record shops that I worked at were all very small.
So I wanted that opportunity for people to come in and spend more money.
I was looking for someone who could help with the customer experience, who could tell them how to interact with me and what to buy, so that they could do that.”
Bower was lucky to have a friend, and mentor, in his new role.
“He was like my second or third best friend.
He’s an accountant, so he’s a very experienced one, and a really good listener.
I could tell he was interested in what I was doing.
So he helped me with everything.
He got me a new laptop, a laptop for the records and he helped set up all the systems.
He also got me my first two computer printers and the first CD player, and then he helped with the digital stuff, so I had everything done.”
I could have said ‘that’s fine, but I want you to work with me.’ “
In the beginning, I had my boss come over and say ‘what can we do to make this record shop better?’.
I could have said ‘that’s fine, but I want you to work with me.’
I got it down to ‘what do you need me to do?’
You know, I’ve never worked for someone like that before. “
And it was very rewarding.
You know, I’ve never worked for someone like that before.
He knows what he’s doing.
He had a way of getting you to do things you don’t usually get to
