Managing your boss can be a challenge, but there are things you can do to help manage the situation.1.
Be a bit more aware of the tone of the conversationsAround 80 per cent of staff in Australia are at work at the same time, so you need to be aware of how your boss is speaking to you.
This is especially important if you are dealing with a boss who is constantly changing his or her tone, so take time to listen to how your co-workers talk.
If you hear a colleague say something that doesn’t quite make sense, you can ask the person if they’re saying that to you to help sort it out.2.
Think about what your co and your boss are doing in relation to the topic of the meetingYou might think you know the tone and the subject matter of the conversation, but you might not have thought about the context in which it’s being held.
Take this step if you can, as it’s a sign you might be able to get away with some things.
For example, if a co-worker is talking about the latest news, and they are clearly upset that you have a new project that they haven’t been able to complete yet, it could mean that they are unhappy with your work and they may be pushing back against your efforts.3.
Think strategicallyIf you’re in a high-pressure situation, you need a strategy.
If the boss isn’t doing anything to change the situation, then you need some way to manage the tension.
A good tactic is to say something like, “I don’t want you to take the blame for the situation”, and then try to convince the boss that it is in their best interests to move forward with the project.4.
Find out if there’s a way to talk it throughIf you are not in a position to discuss your boss’ issues with him or her directly, or you’re not sure how you can get through to your boss, there is a good chance you can find a way out of the situation yourself.
It might be a difficult conversation, or a bit uncomfortable, but it can help to have a plan of action, such as the idea that if you get through it, you’ll get through any problems later.
For instance, if you feel that your boss has been dismissive, or is giving you a hard time, you might try and convince the other person that the way to resolve the situation is to move on to other issues.
You could also look at ways to resolve problems yourself, such a finding a solution to a problem that’s not as straightforward as you might expect.

If something isn’t right, speak upIf your boss tells you that something isn´t right, it’s best to get up and say something about it, because it’s likely you’ll be in a better position to take responsibility for the problem.
This could be an important conversation, such it if your boss told you they are putting a limit on the number of hours you can work, or if you were told you couldn’t work more than four hours a day.6.
Look for ways to change your boss´s toneIt’s a good idea to try and change your manager’s tone, because you might feel uncomfortable about what you have been told.
In some situations, it may be difficult to see what your boss might say in a particular situation.
For this reason, it is a great idea to find ways to help yourself and your co to be more comfortable in the workplace, so that you can communicate better.
For example, a good way to help your boss feel more comfortable is to try something different to their usual behaviour.
If they’re always talking about how much they love their co-working space, it might be best to find another job that suits you, or to work from home.
This might mean you work from a shared workspace with colleagues.
This can also help you get a sense of what your manager thinks about your work.
