More than 70,000 Australians are employed by employers in Australia, but according to a new study, that number is actually dropping.
Key points:”There’s a real opportunity to find jobs in the private sector,” says the Australian Council for Employment studyThe Council says private sector employment has increased by about 10% in the past 10 years but is down by 15% in 2020The study found the private-sector workforce is shrinking, and says many are in part-time jobsThe Council also says more people are working part- time, with some of those jobs being lower paying than the minimum wageThere are a number of factors that contribute to this trend.
According to the Council, private sector jobs have increased by more than 10% over the past decade, but the growth in the sector is down between 15% and 20%.
“In the private sectors, there’s a very large number of people working part time,” the study’s co-author, Joanna Robinson, told news.com.au.
“That means that a lot of those people will be out of work, in a sense, or they’re part of a household that’s at low income.”
Robinson said that when people work part- or full-time, they have a lower wage, and often they also need a flexible work schedule.
“We have an expectation in Australia that people want to work, so if you’re working part of the time you’re expected to be available for work,” she said.
“If you’re not working, it’s not an acceptable option for most people.”
In 2016, Australia’s unemployment rate was 5.5%.
The study finds that the number of part- and full-timers is falling, but there are a significant number of them in the workforce.
“The main factor that drives that is a very small increase in the proportion of people in part time, and that’s partly because of a change in the labour market,” Robinson said.
This is partly due to changes to the workforce that occurred during the economic downturn, she said, such as the closure of many private sector services, such the mines and mining industries.
“People are coming into the workforce in part because they need that flexibility and flexibility is very important for the economy,” Robinson added.
While part-timing jobs are becoming more common in Australia’s private sector, Robinson said they are not as easy to find as they once were.
“Part-time work is a lot more difficult to find than full- time work,” Robinson explained.
“You have to be very careful when looking for a part-timer job because you might not get any part- hours or part- days, you might have to work extra hours, or work longer hours, and those extra hours can be very difficult to justify, especially for people on low incomes.”
Rob Robinson and Joanna Smith, co-authors of the Australian Employer’s Networking Survey (AENSS), explain how to find the right job for youIn 2016-17, more than half (52%) of all Australians working part or full time were part-, full- or part time.
But the majority of those employed were in low paid jobs, with the highest proportion (67%) working in retail, hospitality and catering.
In the housing industry, the largest group of people employed (61%) were in part, full or part, while the second largest group (41%) were on low pay.
Robinson also said there are many people who work part time in private sector roles who are looking for more flexible working hours.
“There are many low-paid private sector workers that are looking to move into higher paid private sector work,” the report states.
“These people are looking at being in a lower-paid part-hour or part day job, so they’re able to move around more, but they’re also able to work more flexible hours.”
According to a 2016 report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were 4,836,600 people working in the Australian private sector.
The Council of Australian Governments says there is an opportunity to attract people who can contribute to the economy.
“Private sector workers have a wide range of skills and experience, and this includes people who are on low wages, low income, in part or all-time positions, and for those who work long hours, those hours are often unpaid,” the organisation said in a statement.
“Employers should also consider the unique needs of these workers, including those who have been employed in the public sector and who have experienced a range of social issues such as homelessness, discrimination, or poverty.”
Robson said the Council’s research also revealed there were a number who were part time for economic reasons.
“Some people are part-Time in part of their job, and they can work longer and they may find their skills are not suited to their particular needs,” she told newscom.ae.
